Image to text
Pull the text out of screenshots, scans and photos of documents.
- Runs on your device, nothing uploaded
- Free, no sign-up, no watermark
- Language data downloads once per language
Before you start
These tools are free for everyday use. Please only use files you have the right to use, and don’t use them to mislead, harass or harm anyone, for example by changing documents or IDs, or editing photos of people without their consent.
To keep things that way, images are checked on your device for explicit or violent content, and extracted text is checked for threats. The checks run in this tab, so nothing is uploaded.
Drop images with text
Screenshots, scans or photos of documents, up to 20 MB each and 20 at a time. You can paste a screenshot too.
That file type won't work here.
How to use it
- Pick the language of the text. Add a second language if the image mixes two, such as English and Hindi.
- Drop one or more images, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
- Check the highlighted lines on the image, edit the text if needed, then copy it or download it as a .txt file.
Good to know
- Works best on clear, printed text: screenshots, scanned pages and straight photos of documents.
- Handwriting, curved pages and very small or blurry text give poor results.
- Images are checked on your device for explicit or violent content, and the extracted text is checked for threats, before anything is shown.
- Each language adds a one-time download of roughly 2 to 15 MB. Fewer languages means faster and more accurate results.
- For a PDF, use Merge & split PDFs to pull out pages, then screenshot them, or use a PDF reader that can copy text if the PDF already has it.
Questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. Text recognition runs in your browser using Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine. Only the engine and language data are downloaded, once.
Which Indian languages are supported?
Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu, plus English. Accuracy on Indian scripts is good for clean printed text and weaker for stylised fonts.
What do the highlighted boxes mean?
Each box is a line the engine found. Yellow boxes were read confidently. Red boxes had low confidence, so check those words.
Can it read tables?
It reads the text in reading order but does not rebuild table columns. For tables, check the result carefully or paste it into a spreadsheet and split columns there.
